AI4LAM

Challenge

AI4LAM operates at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cultural heritage—libraries, archives, and museums. Most AI-related identities rely on predictable tropes: neural networks, abstract gradients, or futuristic aesthetics. None of these reflect the reality of AI4LAM's work.

The identity needed to capture the transition from analogue to digital, from tangible to computational, while remaining grounded in the institutional and human context of cultural heritage.

Process

Instead of attempting to visualize "intelligence," the focus shifted toward representing transformation. This led to a conceptual direction built around materiality and degradation—how physical artefacts behave when translated into digital form.

Dithering became the central mechanism. Not as a stylistic effect, but as a visual principle that inherently sits between states. It allowed images to move from continuous tone to discrete pixels, mirroring the exact process AI4LAM engages with: the conversion of analogue information into digital structures. This positioned the identity within a space of transition rather than resolution.

To support this in practice, a custom dithering tool was developed and implemented as a WordPress plugin. This moved the project beyond static design into infrastructure, allowing the organization to generate assets independently while preserving the integrity of the system.

Historically associated with early digital imaging and print reproduction, dithering sits precisely at the boundary between analogue and digital.

Result

The result is a tactile identity system, allowing AI4LAM to communicate AI through a more human and accessible visual language.

The visual system is designed to be flexible and generative, able to adapt across events, presentations, screens, and print—just as AI4LAM itself operates as a platform for shared knowledge, experimentation, and collaboration. In this way, the brand identity does not illustrate AI. It visualizes transformation.
